Tomorrow's FA Vase Game Reading Town v Warlingham

The Reading boys take on Warlingham in the Second Round of the FA Vase tomorrow afternoon at Scours Lane. Warlingam are bringing 2 coaches so no doubt a good turnout tomorrow, so make sure you get down to Scours Lane for action packed day with a lively atmosphere.

The Sausage than a Egg will be at the lane!!!!!!!

Wars bow out with pride
Supported by a fantastic travelling support Wars fall just short in the FA Vase

Before we get into the detail of the game which won’t use many words!) a little about the occasion and the day.

This was the biggest day in this clubs 114 history and despite the result was a fantastic day out. We took 80 people to the game across with all our adult teams represented and 20 Colts also entering fully into the spirit with their “replica” shirts and scarves. Reading Town officials commented that this was the best away support they had seen since AFC Wimbledon arrived in 2002.

We outnumbered them in the ground and in the bar. We drank them almost dry and put their catering facilities under pressure. The spirit we showed and support we provided was excellent and to see the players thanking the travelling support afterwards was a real highlight for me.

The Reading Town fans seem to call themselves the “Barmy Army” but we had our own barmy army on the day in Crunch, Burnsy and Rocky who attempted to out sing the opposition by standing right behind them. For me I will never forget their short (thankfully) rendition of Away in a Manger. Almost seasonal and I don’t think I have ever heard that at a football ground before and doubt I will again.

Everybody deserves a great big pat on the back for their efforts yesterday especially Tucker and the team who got us this far and did all they could to warm a chilly afternoon for the excellent travelling throng.

Now to the football….

Reading took the initiative in the early stages with a shot wide on 3 mins and a head over from a corner after 7 mins and it seemed Danny Coote in goal was going to have a busy afternoon.

It could have all changed when an innocuous foul by Jansen drew a violent response from the centre half who clearly kicked Jansen in retaliation. Despite the baying away support the referee “bottled it” and the defender saw only yellow.

Reading continued to dictate the game and Wars could just not get going. Wide men Baker and Francis were being well marshalled and Francis was forced to leave the fray and be replaced by Neaves.

Coote was out of his goal quickly on 23 minutes to stop the “Beast” in his tracks and again on 32 mins he made a great save down to his right to keep Wars in it. Wars started to get into it as the half came to a close and Baker had a shot saved and Neaves crossed but nobody had ventured far enough forward to turn it in. Higgins was booked on 41 mins having been the victim of a foul and he shot wide shortly afterwards to bring the half to a close. Reading Town 0 Wars 0

The 2nd half was more open but again Reading were having the better of it. Coote was again in the thick of the action and together with the excellent Cecil they were keeping Wars in it. The no4 for Reading was excellent in their midfield but he got booked for a foul on Greenhouse (N) after 58 mins.

Reading went in front on 61 mins when Wars were beaten for pace down the right and the centre forward scored at the far post as wars failed to clear the incoming ball. It continued with Reading dictating the play until the 75th minute when the midfield no4 walked for his second bad foul. Wars went close from the free kick and started to take control in their search for an equaliser to take it to extra time.

The keeper dropped the ball after 63 mins and Greenhouse came close. Brant had a good shot on 84 mins but it was all too little and too late and the game was over.

MOM: The whole team deserve a special mention for the overall achievement. That said we didn’t really turn up and do ourselves justice in this game and it was a bit of a lame exit. That should not distract from 2 great performances from both Cecil and Coote. They were superb on the day and things could have looked a bit more one-sided without their determination and effort.
